NUA Singapore - Japanese wax and facial salon review

Whenever I have a bad hair day or I have a blemish on my face, I refuse to take any photos. Let's face it, as much as we wish we were born with Fang Bing Bing's flawless skin or Fann Wong's never aging complexion, that is rarely the case. For me at least I admit that's true! It's up to your own efforts to diligently follow your skincare routine, and that's why we girls spend tons in department stores. We are women - we can't help wanting to look our best!

But try as we might, there are times where we need specialists to help us. If you just got back from a cold country, for example, your skin (which always seemed oily in Singapore's humid weather), is now as dry as the desert and is flaking! OR you may have used some products that aren't suitable for your skin, and now it is inflamed and you are breaking out. What should you do??? Of course you can't just go to ANY salon for a facial, you can't risk anything worse happening to your skin. Which is why a salon's reputation is so important.

I recently checked out NUA, a japanese beauty and waxing salon in Singapore and am here to share my review! It's really rare to find japanese beauty salons here, especially one where all staff speak BOTH fluent japanese and english!!

Don't miss this door!!

NUA was a short walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT Station, and helms from Tokyo. One of their branches in Tokyo is in a mega hip district called, Omotesando where only cool kids go. I totally missed this door the first time and had to do a double take when I realised I had reached the end of the street. Oops!

Part I:

Facial

When I reached, I was greeted cheerfully and was promptly presented with hot tea. My therapist, Shiori-san introduced herself as I filled in a form describing what I wanted to achieve for my face. If pigmentation spots annoy you or if you want smoother skin, those are all possible to list down too! She then recommended NUA's signature treatment, which is the NUA Customized Facial (60 mins, $135). As its name suggests, it is a customized, results-driven, therapeutic treatment to suit your skin type and needs! Was super excited to see how my skin could improve in just an hour!

The facial room, where the magic happens

Once I had enough tea, I was brought to the facial room where I got comfy on this bed here. My young and pretty therapist, Shiori, (whom I also found out later is also the owner), started with a thorough skin-analysis and gave me a quick run through of my skin's condition. I need to sleep more! Then she left the room briefly to mix products for me as I relaxed on this comfy bed.

My facial began officially with a gentle cleansing, then a mild chemical peel mask followed after. NUA uses products from PCA and Dermalogica which are two of the most trusted skincare brands used by professionals worldwide! In the initial discussion, I told Shiori that I wanted a 'brighter' face and what better way to do so than to get rid of the dead skin cells??

One of my aesthetic doctor friends told me that strong chemical peels can make your face turn red and you have to avoid sunlight for at least a week! In our crazy Singapore weather that is almost impossible to avoid, so I'm really glad Shiori shares the same sentiments as me and prefers mild chemical peels instead.

All customised facials at NUA include high-tech machine treatments which are suitable for your skin type and hand-picked according to your skin's condition! Another concern I had was my terribly stubborn dark eye circles, which Shiori did a micro-current eye treatment to activate the skin's fibre and stimulate the area. It was really soothing!! Zero pain at all, though I was initially shocked at the first vibration lol.

As my nose is generally more prone to blackheads and whiteheads. Shiori recommended an organic clay mask to clean them out, which explains the white bit. I was really happy when my nose was smooth at the end of the treatment!! Goodbye blackheads! Well, stubborn whiteheads (if you have them you will be aware), are not that easily removed, usually a few sessions will help.

Brushes are used to apply masks on your skin, I like how they were so soft and nice to feel! Do note that trimming of eyebrows is not included (though you could add it on), and deep cleansing extractions are a separate facial treatment.

After about an hour, which passed by reaaally fast because it was so relaxing, here are the results! Okay the skin tone is slightly different that's probably due to the auto settings of my camera, but ignoring that, my skin definitely looks more radiant, and was more bouncy too! Yes that is me without any make-up please refrain from making comments that will make me unhappy.

Verdict: Really love it! Will definitely want to come back to give my face another pampering session. Shiori is really gentle and has years of experience treating skin of different types, plus she's super fun to talk to!!

Part II:

Waxing & Permanent hair removal using Depilar System!

After the fabulous treatment, I decided to try NUA salon's permanent hair removal service. The product they use for this hair removal is a new formula which reduces hair growth without the need for lasers! Even though I'm a frequent IPL user, there's always the risk that your skin becomes sensitive, or your skin darkens/reddens due to the procedure. When I heard about its benefits, I was eager to try it out!

Step one, waxing. To ensure that the produce is penetrated into your pores, the treatment begins with a wax!

I picked my Upper lip to try out as I had never waxed this area before! Waxing doesn't hurt much for me, does that mean my pain tolerance is pretty high? Haha.

I look like KFC's Colonel Sanders right? Haha!

After waxing, Shiori applied calming mist to soothe the area, and moved on to my lower leg wax!

I was just chillin on the bed when a delicious smell of chocolate hit me. I looked up and realised it was the wax! How amazing was that! The whole process was made even sweeter (hurhur) and I was craving chocolate for a bit after that, haha.

Once the wax was done, Shiori applied the two Depilar System activators and left it to dry! Ok I know what you're thinking.

What is a Depilar System?

The Depilar System is used directly after a traditional waxing, sugaring, threading or tweezing to target the hair follicles, and is an enhanced enzyme-based formula which is safe to use on any part of your body.

Since it was my first time using the Depilar System, it was natural that I had a few queries, and here are some simple Q and A that I think you guys might wonder about too!

Q: I have been doing IPL on xx areas, can I use Depilar System?

Answer: Yes! The Depilar System will work if you have not had success with laser treatments. You must discontinue laser treatments and continue with regular and successive Depilar Applications.

Q: I have dry skin. Is that a problem?

Answer: No. Simply exfoliate or dry brush the skin prior to application.

For more info, check out the official Depilar System website.

For best results, it is recommended to go for your Depilar System treatment every 4-weeks for applications on the face, and 5-6-week intervals for applications on the body. This is to coincide with your hair growth cycle and allows your hair to grow out just enough for maximum effectiveness! Most ladies have experienced 0 hair growth after 16-24 months of continued use!

Verdict: Two weeks on and my skin still feels pretty smooth! Though results are not drastically different (ie, like 50% less hair) you can tell that hair growth isn't that fast and is thinner. You can also use this for brazilian too! Could get hooked onto this and stop using IPL forever lol.

Thank you Shiori and team for the wonderful experience! Be sure to check them out for some pampering you deserve!

Japanese Eyelash Extensions at KJ Studio Review

Falsies are soooo mafan (troublesome). You have to apply glue, wait for it to dry a bit, place them gingerly on your eyelids and at night you have to remove them gingerly. When I heard about these eyelash extensions and just how easy and convenient they were, I decided to give them a try. Looked up various eyelash extension places online and decided to trust my eyelashes (and eyes!) with KJ Studio, and my beautician was Jeane.

What are eyelash extensions?

Jeane was really nice and patient to explain the whole concept of eyelash extensions to me. Eyelash extensions are applied lash by lash on top of your own natural lashes, which means there is a limit to the number of lashes you can apply to your nail. The more eyelashes you have, the more extensions you can put, and the stronger your eyelashes, the thicker the lashes you can use!

This is why you need to put eyelash growing serums on your eyelid (which are also sold at KJ Studio!). Anyway, my own eyelashes aren't the most numerous or strong, so Jeane told me that my ideal number of lashes is 60, ON EACH EYE. I was trying to count my eyelashes and I can't count 60 strands of them so I think they are probably stuck together or I lost count somewhere.

See that white sticker under your eye? That's to make sure your lower lashes don't get in the way, and also to ensure you don't open your eyes during the procedure. This is very important! There were a few times when I was napping and tried to open my eyes out of instinct but luckily these were holding them down lol.

My experience

KJ Studio is on the second floor of a shophouse near Outram Park MRT. It has an adorable area for you to do your make up after, since no eye make up is allowed before the treatment.

I filled in a registration form and Jeane proceeded to introduce me to the different types of lashes, the styles eg "Kawaii" (cute), "Sexy" and "Mix" of both. I picked Mix because my falsies are usually the Sexy type hahahah.
If you look closely at the picture (click to enlarge), Sexy lashes are longer only at the ends, but Mix lashes are long from the middle of your eye. Kawaii gives a very natural, olive eyed look which doesn't suit me haha.

You get to pick the curliness of your lashes too! I picked C curve because I wanted the effect to be quite noticeable but not too gyaru (like crazy obvious) Jeane asked general questions like if I wore eyeliner on a daily basis, if I wore contacts/specs on usual days, etc and I told her to pick the length and thickness of the eyelashes for me, since it was my first time.

PSST: You can pick coloured eye lashes as well!!! I decided to go with all black this time but I definitely want to try the coloured ones one day!

These were my lashes before:

My whole procedure including consultation took 1 hour. That's really fast huh! Maybe it's because my lashes aren't strong enough to do more...  Jeane is really pro at it so I actually fell asleep zzzz

This is how you'd look like if you were to do extensions at KJ Studio (That's not me, and that's another japanese beautician)

Woke up to the splendor which is my lashes:

Aren't they amazing??

Side-by-side comparison:

Thicker, longer, curlier.

My eyes look bigger now. Now imagine when I put on some eyeliner, ZERO mascara and a bit of eyeshadow.

They are even more obvious in real life! That's the power of longer lashes.

Impressive, huh? At KJ Studio, my 60 eyelash extensions on each eye (which is 120 in total), costs $110. Unlimited lashes are $150.

When choosing which salon to do your eyelash extensions at, remember that the most important feature to consider is the skill of your beautician. These are your eyes we're talking about!! Jeane has been doing eyelash extensions for over 5 years now, and was trained in Japan. She speaks fluent English so don't worry about having any language barriers.

The only trouble I had with my eyelash extensions so far is that I forgot I can't use cotton wool to remove my eye makeup anymore. The wool bits kinda got stuck to my eyelashes LOL, but luckily I managed to get them out. A friend suggested I use cotton buds instead which work like a charm. Please remember not to use cotton wool!!

Important!!

If you have just had permanent eyebrow done, please wait till the scab comes off and the eyebrow surface is clean. If you have botox injected, please wait for 2-3 weeks. If you just had LASIK surgery, please wait for about 1 month till the eyes' symptom settles.

KJ Studio is a stone's throwaway from Outram Park MRT, but if you want to, you can walk from Chinatown MRT which is a bit further.

Do make appointments before you come because they're usually quite busy!

Vedure Mineral Earth full body massage review

Mannnn some days I really feel like giving my body some pampering, and body massages are an awesome way to reward yourself after a tough day or week, both physically and psychologically. Some of the benefits are improved digestion, relieved muscle aches and better blood circulation. On one such day, I went to try Vedure's new Mineral Earth full body massage that was just lanched in August, and conveniently located at Wheelock place!

Not wanting to be bothered by the crowd in town, I picked an appointment on Sunday morning to do my full body mud massage. It was my first time doing a mud massage, so I wasn't sure what to expect. When I walked into Vedure, staff politely asked me to fill in a form about my medical conditions, allergies, and also, my preferences for food, music and drinks!

After filling them up, I was ushered to my private sanctuary (aka, room.)

Everything was neat and ready for me to just lose myself in paradise. I changed out and lay down on the bed, only to be pleasantly surprised that...

THE BED WAS HEATED!!!!

I love the thoughtfulness and intricate details! Heated beds are the best in an air conditioned room and your back feels so nice and snug. This is seriously a great place to get a massage in Orchard road, Wheelock Place is so central~!

Candles and a plant to add on to that relaxed atmosphere

And so, with the lights dimmed and the sound of waves and birds chirping. my massage began. My masseuse would share with me about the products that she was going to use on me, and explain the benefits before she started any treatment, which I really appreciated. Many a time have I gone for massages not knowing what sort of oil they were using or what technique they were going to apply o_o

The Mineral Earth mud that I used was the White Clay and Lavender Mask, to promote relaxation and exfoliate my skin at the same time. After this massage, I realised that mud also helped to restore the nutrients on your skin and didn't leave your skin feeling dry and dehydrated! My complexion also looked fairer and I felt clean :)

Of course, I couldn't take a photo of myself during the massage but here's a visual aid. Imagine your body covered in that! It feels a little rough when it's massaged onto your skin but it's quite soothing once you get used to it. How I wish my massages would last forever!!

PSST! When you lie face down, you see a basket of flowers, instead of carpet or towels . A nice touch!

An hour later, my enjoyable and delicate massage was over and my masseuse told me to rinse off the mud in the shower pod, which was also in the same room.

I had like minimal makeup so forgive the mess.

To my delight, the shower pod was made of Grohe's shower facilities! If you haven't heard about the wonders of Grohe, check out my blog post here.

I felt a little guilty about dirtying the shower pod (if you look at the floor of the shower you can see a bit of the mud left), oh well I guess they could be rinsed off with water? It was an amazing massage and I will definitely want to come back!!

The Mineral Mud treatment can also be extended to facials or part of your nail spa treatment, as Vedure also does nail services.

For the full body massage, the prices are shown below:

1h - $198
90 min - $238
2h - $268

Don't be put off by the price though, it's REALLY worth it! Professional hands untying the knots and stresses built up... music to calm your senses... and of course, great service. Plus, the 1h does not include shower off time so you can take your time enjoying Grohe's shower too.

After you've changed and freshened up, Vedure staff will lead you to a bar counter area where you are served some tea and snacks, according to your preferences that you filled in on the form earlier.

Some of the possible combinations you might get: longan drink with caramelized biscuits, granola biscuits, ginger tea or hempstead tea. Be sure to check them out!

I'll be using the Elizabeth Arden liquid foundation to prove that the Ceramide Facial Mask removes makeup and leaves your skin feeling fresh ;)

Using Elizabeth Arden's Flawless Finish Perfectly Nude Foundation with SPF15 instantly diminishes appearance of pores and imperfections, creating flawless skin! It also moisturizes your skin for 24 hours. It's very lightweight so you can pile on layers to increase the coverage. Their key ingredients include Soy Lipid technology, natural plant extract, Vitamins C, E and radiant mineral crystals to blur fine lines and wrinkles. Perfect for all skin types and it's also available in 26 different shades retailing at $70.

BEFORE! With makeup.

How to use

It's been a long day, and you're so tired you just want to sleep as fast as possible. Removing your make up is SUCH a chore. This is where Elizabeth Arden comes in to help.

Step 1: Self-Foaming Mask

Apply a 20cent amount of he Self-Foaming Mask on the back of your hand and quickly spread this out onto your whole face. Avoid your eye area (so you have to remove your eye makeup separately) No rubbing needed, just nimble fingers. You'd immediately start to feel a sizzling, tingly even burning sensation. Don't freak out!! (and try not to giggle as it may be ticklish) This is just the activating chemical and enzymatic exfoliators cleansing and purifying your skin. Remember that this works better on uncleansed skin.

The sizzling is thanks to the lactic acid and protease enzyme with botanical extracts which gently exfoliates and dissolves skin-clogging impurities. It also contains Glycerin which replenishes skin with moisture so it doesn't feel so drying after it has sizzled away.
Arghhh can't take the sizzling!!

It was quite an overwhelming, slightly burning sensation for me but I endured it. Once the popping stops, which is about 2 minutes later, rinse your face with luke-warm water and pat to dry. Did you notice that your makeup has been removed? I practically ran to the toilet to wash it off because it was itchy and after washing it off, my skin was slightly pink. It's all worth it though, once you see the results after the next step. Which brings me to:-

Step 2: Replenishing Serum

After washing my face off with warm water and applying the serum!

Apply the Replenishing Serum to your face and massage into your skin in a circular motion. The serum reinforces the skin's protective barrier and locks in moisture more efficiently. The best part is that it also smooths fine lines and wrinkles over time! After I applied this replenishing serum, my face stopped being pink and the slight burning sensation went away. Instead my skin was brighter and my make up was removed!! Once the product is absorbed, complete with your preferred moisturizer.

Notice my make-up is gone without using any make up remover products apart from the Ceramide Facial Mask! Can't believe I'm sharing my makeup-less photo argh.

The Ceramide Boosting 5 Minute Facial is retailing for SGD 149 in department stores island wide.

White Label Premium 100% Placenta Range Skin cream review

A while back I picked the Skin Cream from White Label's Placenta range to try. Thanks Camy! It was my first experience with a placenta-ingredient product, so I was quite eager to see if the benefits were as good as advertised.

What is Placenta?

"Placenta" is the essence of the organ that connects the life of the fetus and the mother, full of nutrients that nourishes. Placenta accelerates the speed of skin reneweal, to solve the fundamental problems of freckles,
dullness, wrinkles, and dry skin and create supple skin smooth like a newborn baby.
Not really sure how White Label gets their placenta's as human ones are usually passed out after the baby is born... but trying not to think too much about it.

WHITE LABEL Premium Placenta's Elastic White Skin Cream

It's very lightweight, suitable for all weathers and lasts about 2.5 months per bottle. I really like how the product is colourless, which makes it more visually appealing, paraben free and doesn't have a strange odour! Some cosmetic products smell terrible and I feel a little turned off applying them on my skin because my skin would smell like that too. You'd want a product that makes your boyfriend/girlfriend comment "Oooh you smell nice!" after kissing you, right?? #truestory

Recommended use: After applying toner, the product is quickly absorbed and helps your skin stay hydrated all day long. Applying this at bed-time allows you to wake up with glowy, smooth skin. The reason why there's a baby's face on the cover is because you can get baby smooth skin too!!

Retailing at $18.90, this skin cream has no additives, no added flavour and does not have mineral oil content. Hence it is suitable for people with sensitive or allergic skin. I suppose so as it was used to transfer nutrients to babies as a kid so it has to be very gentle.

White Label Premium Placenta range is now available at BHG, John Little, Guardian Health & Beauty, Nishino Pharmacy and Plaza@Cosme 100AM

Using #05 Baby Peony. It's Romantic and sweet and keeps your lip colour from fading!

Etude House's 앤 로즈 컬렉션 &Rose Collection 2013

Inspired by the fairy tale ‘Sleeping Beauty’, this makeup collection creates the magical moment when Princess Rose is blossoming out into a alluring lady from a pure little girl. When you doll yourself up on your eyes and lips, don't forget to use a blusher to balance the colour on your face or you'll look incomplete ;)

The Story

Princess Rose lives in the woods with 3 nymphs to hide herself from the witch’s curse. When she turns 16, she walks into a white rose garden by a strong attraction and sees something intriguing, a spinning wheel in the middle of the garden for the first time and get pricked on her finger by

a needle ..!

A scarlet blood drop falls on the rose garden and all the roses starts blossoming and turning red.

Like the roses blossomed in alluring red from pure white, Princess Rose falls in the dazzling magic …

and these Rose tint Lips turns a pure girl into an enchanting princess.

Really love these rich and creamy tint lip colours that leave your lips looking soft and plump :)

Rosy Tint Lips

These 8 lip stains (7g each) are available at Etude Counters and come in such pretty packaging!

From left to right: -
#1 Before Blossom - Real Red with yellow tone - sexy and seductive
#2 Sunny Flower - Orange Red with yellow tone - complements any skin tone for days you want to stand out
#3 Rose Petal - Red Pink - flirtyyyyyy
#4 Sweet Poison - Hot Pink with blue tone - young and energetic
★Main★ #05 Baby Peony - Pink with yellow tone - fun and cute
#6 English Garden - Milky Pink with yellow tone - sweet and innocent
#7 Tea Rose - Nudy Pink - subtle but classy
★Main★ #8 After Blossom - Very Burgundy - evening night out

My favourites are #2, #3 and #8 but I really love them all for their rich shades! For longer lasting colour, blot with tissue and reapply another layer.

Features

The Lip Stains have a very vivid pigment, so don't be too excited and squeeze too much at once. Build on the colour starting with one thin layer because the colours are really strong, which I love!

There's a soft sponge tip applicator which makes it easy to dab and control the intensity of the colours. However because of its round top, it might smudge more easily so be extra careful when handling the edges of your lips.

After applying, you'll notice it leaves a matt finish, which you can top up with your favourite lip gloss for that extra sheen. The colour stays on even after eating!

I used the &Rose collection lip stains for more than 12 hours a time and I'm very happy to find that my lips are not dry throughout the day! This is because of their lip stains contain sheer butter and rose oil extracts to keep your lips moist and comfortable all day long.

&Rose Flowering Nails - Nail polish

The &Rose Collection also has a small range just for your nails! Featuring two limited edition Rosy nail kit that creates blossoming roses on the fingertips with delicate round or french lace stickers! (1.9g each)

Blossoming roses on your finger tips
#1: Pure watery rose color
#2: Rose color with matt finish

#1 Watery Rose
This watery syrup-like texture nail polish is perfectly blended for the natural gradation without creasing! You can achieve a gradation by mixing both colours together or layering them one after another.

Take note that due to its watery state, it takes a longer time to dry.

How to use

1. Base coat nails and manicure nails with one color or two for the rosy gradation
2. Top coat your nails to maintain the glossy finish
Finish off by adding the lace design! (Keep reading to find out how to do so)

#2 Velvet Rose
The second nail polish is to achieve a Matt Velvet Texture on your nail. The hydrated silica formulated in the base naturally removes the glossiness of the nail color and leaves it velvety matt on nails. I was initially quite surprised at the effect but the matt finish looks gorgeous with the lace top! However, note that this nail polish dries very fast and is quite thick, so any uneven surface of your nail will ruin this look instantly.

PSST! To avoid cracking, do not layer it on the base coat or another color.
How to use
1.Manicure your choice of the color on your cleanly prepared nails
2. Velvety finish appears in 2~3 minutes as the gloss on the nail surface disappears

Finish off by adding a lace sticker!

Using the Lace Stickers
These Rosy nail kits come with a unique real fabric lace stickers in either a round or french style here's how to use them effectively!

1. Choose the right size for your nails  .
2. Stick it from the inner corner of the nails
3. Get it trimmed with a  scissor or a nail buffer
4. Top coat the nails for coating and fixing the lace

and you're done!! Really easy to do, make sure that your nail polish has dried fully before adding the lace stickers though, especially for the watery rose nail polishes that take longer to dry.

Feeling instantly fairer and loving how the lip tint brightens my face and adds colour.
